Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much does Level One cost?
A. Level One costs $599.95. This price includes everything needed to teach the first 140 words in the PCI Reading Program.

Q. How much time should a student spend on the program each day?
A. Because the PCI Reading Program is an individualized program, the amount of time spent on it per day can be flexible based upon a student's attention span and the availability of the instructor. If a student spends 45 minutes or more per day on the program, that student will likely complete Level One in approximately one year. If a student spends 20 to 30 minutes per day on the program, that student will likely complete Level One in a year and a half to two years.

Q. What ages is the PCI Reading Program intended for?
A. The PCI Reading Program is intended for students age 5 to adult who have developmental disabilities or significant learning disabilities and need a highly structured program with built-in repetition and review.

Q. What prerequisite skills are required to begin the program?
A. To begin the program, a student needs to be able to demonstrate understanding of simple, one-sentence directions and be able to indicate responses verbally. A student should be able to point or otherwise indicate an answer choice. A student must be able to visually discriminate between letters and words. However, knowledge of the alphabet or the ability to name letters is not necessary.

Q. What research is the PCI Reading Program based on?
A. In developing the PCI Reading Program, the authors reviewed current reading research, research on how the brain learns, and research on the most effective instructional methods for students with developmental disabilities. A research summary detailing specific research used in the program's development will be available when the program ships in March 2007. In addition, classroom-based efficacy studies using the program are planned for the 2007–2008 school year, and those research results will be published in 2008.

Q. When will Level One ship?
A. Level One will be shipped beginning in March 2007. Orders placed after that time will be shipped within one to two weeks of receipt.

Q. Where did the words taught in the program come from?
A. The words taught in the PCI Reading Program represent the most frequently occurring sight words in the English language from such lists as Dolch, Fry, and Harris-Jacobson. In addition, the authors have included real-world nouns and verbs, such as home and jump.

Q. Who is the PCI Reading Program intended for?
A. The PCI Reading Program is designed for students who have developmental disabilities or significant learning disabilities. In addition, it is an appropriate alternative for students who have not been successful with core reading programs and have also not responded to intervention programs. The program may also be used with English language learners who have significant learning disabilities.

Q. Why did PCI create the PCI Reading Program?
A. For years, our customers have been asking for a contemporary, visual-discrimination-based program for true nonreaders. With the PCI Reading Program, we were able to combine our passion for creating real-world, age-appropriate instructional materials with the latest research on how to teach reading through visual discrimination.
